The sun was up within a couple hours, punctuated by noises outside of people moving about and occasional giggles from running children.

Rachel found Reiff on the couch where she left him. Sitting up and watching her as she approached from her bedroom.

“How are you?” she asked in a hushed tone.

“Okay.” He turned his head and motioned to a wheelchair that had been delivered sometime during the night. “Can you bring that a little closer?”

She did so and turned it around, lining it side by side with the couch. Carefully and somewhat awkwardly, she helped Reiff into it.

Once settled, he put his hands on each wheel and pushed himself forward. “Been waiting to use the restroom.”

“Oh, sorry. Do you … need help?”

“Uh, no.”
